Questions and answers

  • What is welding technology?

This generic term covers everything that has anything to do with welding. From small, mobile welding equipment to large welding machines to stationary welding systems and welding robots, everything is included. This also applies to accessories, wear parts and welding consumables such as inert gas wire, welding wire or roller wire electrodes.

  • Where are the dangers in the use of welding technology?

Welding is a remarkable technology that works with high energy development. Accordingly, there is also potential danger in welding technology. For example, depending on the process used, there is a certain risk of explosion and fire, an electrical hazard, and danger from pollutants that can escape into the ambient air during welding. In arc welding in particular, the optical radiation due to intense UV components is a danger to the eyes and unprotected parts of the body. Noise generation should also not be underestimated.

  • Which welding technology is suitable for work on motor vehicles?

Automotive welding occupies a large share in industry, workshops and even in the do-it-yourself sector. Repairs and overhauls are possible, as is the manufacture of components in vehicle production. The following processes are used particularly frequently:

    • MIG/MAG welding

    • TIG welding

    • Welding with flux cored wires

We will be happy to determine which process is suitable for your needs during an individual consultation.

  • Which welding technology is suitable for pipes?

TIG welding is recommended when welding thin-walled pipes. Thick-walled pipes are often processed initially with root welding using the TIG process, with the remaining layers optionally welded using manual arc welding or the MIG/MAG process.

  • Which welding process is suitable for beginners?

It starts with the question of whether it is worth buying your own welding equipment. The decisive factor, however, is what is to be welded. For smaller jobs in the house or garden and repairs to the car, both electrode welding or arc welding and MAG welding are suitable. Electric welding is particularly attractive for beginners because no gas is needed. However, correct electric welding requires knowledge and experience. Therefore, MAG gas-shielded welding is often the better choice for beginners.

  • In which welding process is the distortion caused by the heat-affected zone the lowest?

The distortion of materials during welding is determined by the size of the heat-affected zone. Particularly when joining dissimilar materials such as steel and aluminum, the workpiece can become severely distorted. The Cold Metal Transfer or CMT process delivers very good results here due to a very stable arc and the low heat input, especially compared to MIG/MAG welding.

  • Which welding processes require a flux cored wire?

A flux cored wire is used in arc welding. In this process, the arc continuously melts the welding wire that is automatically fed in. This process works best with stainless steel, cast iron, most types of carbon steel, and so-called buffer or buildup welding alloys. However, arc welding is not suitable for all materials. Metals that do not contain iron cannot be welded using this technique. These include aluminum, for example, but also exotic alloys.

  • What factors influence the welding process?

Depending on the selected process, three factors in particular have an effect on the welded joint. On the one hand, one should know the material characteristics of the weld as well as the notch effect of the weld. Secondly, the quality of the workmanship during welding plays a decisive role. These factors determine the load-bearing capacity of a welded joint in everyday use. The quality of execution is divided into three grades, which should be selected depending on the requirements and the effort required.

  • What is DIN EN 1090?

In connection with welding work, there is always talk of DIN EN 1090. This is a European standard that regulates the requirements for manufacturer certification, proof of conformity, CE marking and factory production control for load-bearing steel and aluminum components that are to be placed on the market as construction products. Lasaco will be pleased to advise and support you in complying with DIN EN 1090.
