High-performance robots for laser welding

This welding technique is based on the spot heating of the material to be processed by a laser beam. Unlike other joining manufacturing processes, laser welding does not require any additional material. Robots with laser welders are therefore increasingly being used in Industry 4.0.

What are the advantages of combining industrial robots and laser welding systems?

In particular, complex manufacturing processes requiring high positional and repeat accuracy benefit from the use of a laser welding system in conjunction with an industrial robot.

Concrete advantages of laser welding at a glance:

  • High welding speeds due to non-contact workpiece machining

  • Very good accessibility

  • Low thermal load produces hardly any heat distortion on the component and protects the material as a whole

  • The high degree of automation of a modern laser welding system increases both the speed and quality of production

  • Suitable for many different materials (including plastics)

Laser welding: These variants are available

Heat conduction welding with laser robot

If particularly shallow weld seams are required, which should not weld the material to depth, the heat conduction welding process is perfectly suited. Here, the laser's radiation intensity is kept below a critical threshold at which no metal plasma forms and the deep welding effect does not occur.

Deep welding

In laser welding, the so-called deep penetration welding process is the most common variant. This uses a higher energy intensity than heat conduction welding. This creates laser-induced plasma in the material and, through vaporization, ensures deep welding and very strong joints.

Spot and seam welding

Extremely precise weld seams with narrow seam geometry or individual spot welds can be realized very well by laser welding. Welding spots with diameters of less than 0.1 mm are just as possible as very long weld seams. As a result, you get optimum strength of the joint without the disadvantages of a high heat load in the material.

Scanner welding

The scanner welding process is particularly elegant. It is suitable for applications in Industry 4.0 where neither the workpiece nor the laser head needs to be moved to position the laser beam correctly. Instead, position changes are made via a galvanometrically moved rotating mirror, which deflects and perfectly positions the laser beam extremely precisely and in a way that is gentle on the material.

Which industrial robot is suitable for laser welding?

Not all robots are suitable for use with laser welders. Decisive for the precision and quality of the welding technology is the unerring, vibration-free and positionally accurate movement of the laser head. For this reason, Lasaco relies on robots for laser welding that are perfectly adapted to handling the additional weight of the laser head. This benefits both the process quality and the service life of the industrial robot, as premature wear is effectively avoided.

Lasaco has many years of experience in the field of laser welding technology in combination with high-performance robots from the renowned manufacturers KUKA and Reis Robotics. This allows us to provide our customers not only with a robot that is perfectly matched to the requirements of the project in question, but also offers ideal operability and options for further individual customer requirements.

Perfectly dimensioned laser welding system or complete welding cell - we always deliver a laser welding robot that exactly meets your requirements

Especially in Industry 4.0, the requirements for industrial robots are highly diverse. From complete production lines with a laser welding system to a fully assembled welding cell for special work, Lasaco always provides you with an optimal solution.

Above all, we pay attention to your individual needs and requirements that the respective project entails. Thanks to our tailor-made system solutions, we are able to build you a laser welding system that exactly fits your space requirements. Our know-how, acquired over many years, is fully at your disposal.

From the first consultation to the conceptual design of your laser welding technology to the implementation and later service for support and maintenance, Lasaco is your reliable solution partner.

Laser welding with high comfort and easy programming

The processing and programming of the welding robots is designed to be particularly user-friendly thanks to our special welding applications and various option packages. The adjustment of welding parameters during ongoing production is easily possible in a short time and with very fine increments.

In production, position adjustment is required again and again due to fluctuations in Industrie 4.0 components. This can affect both individual spot welds and complete weld seams. With the Lasaco Dynamics option on our laser robots, these adjustments can be made easily via HMI or external IPC on the monitor, without having to make time-consuming position corrections on the industrial robot.

Networking options for Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 is characterized by networking and connection to the Internet. A network connection of your industrial robot with laser welding technology is easily possible at Lasaco. For this purpose, we have a variety of different options for interfaces with which your individual requirements can be realized.

It does not matter whether the focus is on remote access to the robot in order to adjust welding parameters or programs, or whether an interface is required for complete production coordination. With such an interface, you can, for example, define and, if necessary, adjust production data such as cycle times, standing times, piece counts and much more. We configure the interface relevant to your application in advance so that it can be used efficiently in your company without delay.
